Greek explorer Pytheas' journey from the Mediterranean to Saaremaa

In 1976, Estonian writer and later President Lennart Meri published Hõbevalge (“Silverwhite”), weaving ancient exploration, myth and Estonian folklore into a single journey. Fifty years on, Silverwhite turns the book into an immersive world where myth meets technology.

Visitors follow the route of the Greek explorer Pytheas from the Mediterranean to Saaremaa — through navigation, amber, twilight and the edge of the known world. The journey culminates in the story of the Kaali meteorite, which struck Saaremaa, Estonia’s largest island, and left a lasting mark on Nordic and Baltic cultural memory. Lennart Meri connected this impact to the “grave of the sun” described by Pytheas himself. Visitors see real meteorite fragments, then experience the fall through a dedicated light performance.
Sound and light carry the story. Silverwhite is the first exhibition in the Baltic and Nordic countries to use the NOUS Sonic 3D audio system: each visitor wears location-aware headphones and receives a personal soundscape that responds to where they move.

Around 80 original objects — from the Lennart Meri family’s private collection and museums in four countries — are shown directly alongside contemporary sound and light design. The exhibition is curated by film director Martti Helde and travels exactly as it stands in Tallinn.
